instinct by davespertine instinct by davespertine
against the flow
upstream
the rebels
and defiant go
not in rejection of authority
but out of instinct
driven by something inside
through hardship
with determination
to spawn another generation

do what your instinct tells you
don't go with the flow

to follow your heart
even if it kills you
is really living

it's a bit of a cliché, but everyone can relate to clichés, that's the beauty in them. great image, although i would say that it seems like an illustration of the concept rather than an indepedent visual achievement.

only dead fish swim with the stream :D

sometimes the concept of cliche is the most important thing :D
in my appreciation of art, i often think that the idea is more important than the technical execution, of course if you can have both then it is sublime

true :D
i often battle with whether the aesthetics or the idea is the most important in art, and of course a successful fusion of both is the ideal. but at the end of the day, if an artwork doesn't impress me visually, it's more idea and less art.. if that makes sense.
maybe i'm just superficial and like pretty things :giggle:

the idea is part of the aesthetics
and for me, it is more important that it makes me think
or moves me emotionally
than if it is visually stunning

so many visually amazing images
do little more than get a, thats nice out of me

but if something gives me an idea
or reminds me of something
then that's precious

i think we have quite different approaches to art appreciation then. i agree that the idea, and especially the emotional response, are vital to a great piece of art, but the 'visually stunning' part is for me just as important. if it doesnt grab me, and mesmerise me, i can't fully appreciate it.

the mode of transport of the ideas, or the memories that can be shared, is visual. thus the power of the purely visual is immense.

i don't have an approach
there are no limits
it's just that things don't have to be stunning
form me to appreciate them

and also, i value art as something
that you don't have to be good at
to gain great benefits from
and make really cool and interesting stuff
which others can enjoy

i don't like elitism
and the idea that only the best are good enough

i'm not defending or presenting an elitist position.. art benefits all, of course! you don't have to be an "expert" (whatever that means) to gain the benefits. everyone starts with experimenting, and the pure joy of working with, creating, something visual should be shared and enjoyed by all who feel the desire.

but you can't deny the predominantly visual mode of communication of many artforms. if an idea is really good, it will be translated by the forms and understood by the viewer, regardless of how steady the hand that creates it is.

as a musician i can deny the that visual arts are dominant if i want

but i never did...

lets not have a senseless argument over which senses are most important...
it differs for each individual
especially depending on those which are possibly impaired

i leave you with the thought of a wonderfully crafted wax apple
that looks fantastic
but tastes........ xxxx

no matter
if you swim against
or with the stream
one way or the other
the stream
still controls you

not at all
as i watch the fish struggle
on their way upstream
from the bank
i can say, the current has no influence on my struggle

I really relate to this one, Dave. What you wrote, especially. I would just add one more thing: some of us are not defiant or rebellious. We just are different and, no matter how we may try to march in step with the rest of the society around us, we just can't seem to do it because it's our nature to go upstream.

exactly my point
to some extent society strives to program the instinct out of us
and different societies, frown on different aspects of basic human behaviour

people can feel that it is wrong to be normal

Weird-Bird

another reason not to go with the flow :

Birds are flyin' south for winter.
Here's the Weird-Bird headin' north,
Wings a-flappin', beak a-chatterin',
Cold head bobbin' back 'n' forth.
He says, "It's not that I like ice
Or freezin' winds and snowy ground.
It's just sometimes it's kind of nice
To be the only bird in town."
