city of tiny lights

yes it's dark
and as the people fade
into a preoccupation with lights
i am a little dazzled
and that has always kept me awake

although now it often seems
that light as a sign of life is an illusion
and that in fact, light is just a sign of light

i realise that, life goes on
even though we sleep
even if we sleep, through life

fears conspire in daydreams
or at least in theory
and they tell me, our darkest days
are yet to come

if i believed them i would tell you
now would be a good time
to wake up

so tell me, am i dreaming?
